Frostgate is a two-sweep shop with one calendar and one rule: every flue cleaned, camera-checked and logged before the moor’s first hard freeze. We book appointments, not arrival windows, and the log we leave behind is the almanac your chimney keeps about itself.

Why the name
The almanac’s first rule
A chimney does not fail in the fire season. It fails in the spring, in the frost, in the rain nobody swept out of it — and the log is how you see it coming.

What we do
What two sweeps do thoroughly
The sweep, done slowly
Two sweeps, one appointment, no shortcut between them — rods and rotary passes until the second camera pass reads clean, creosote classed by degree, and the soot leaves the house in the vacuum, not on the hearth. Slow is the method; a rushed sweep is a expensive one with the invoice reversed.
The log, written on the mantel
Every visit ends with a written log — depths, passes, the crown’s condition, the damper’s mood — left where the next fire will be lit. Three logs in, your chimney has a biography; five logs in, the pattern tells us the year it will need work, before it announces it with a stain.

A chimney is a four-season object that most people meet for one. The almanac spreads the care across the year — sweep before the frost, read the cap after the thaw, and let the log carry the memory between.
September
The booking
You choose the day and the hour — a person, not a window. The van arrives when the van said it would, with runners over the shoulder and the camera in the case.
October
The sweep
Rods, rotary, the camera pass before and after, and the class of creosote in the log. Ninety minutes at the fire, and the house is cleaner than the last fire left it.

If the draw needs watching, we say so at the sweep and tell you what a good first fire looks like. A flue we have cleaned is a flue we will talk about on the phone in November, gladly.

The spring check-over
The $140 read of cap, crown and flashing after the thaw — the visit that catches the frost damage while it is a repair, not a rebuild. The log gains its second entry of the year.

Why appointments and not windows?
Because you would not accept a window from a dentist, and your living room is more personal than a chair. Two sweeps, one calendar, the hour stated — it costs us jobs some weeks and it is the reason the calendar fills by September.
One sweep a year, really?
Seasoned wood and a healthy flue, yes. The log’s creosote class is the honest calendar: second-degree readings two autumns running means we shorten the interval, and we will say so in writing rather than sell you a second visit you do not need.
What about the jackdaws?
The moor’s birds favour an open flue in April, and a nest in a chimney is a fire with feathers in it. We remove them after the young have fledged, fit a cap sized to the draw, and the problem becomes next spring’s smug log entry.
Do you service the gas conversions?
Yes — the inspection-grade pass, the connector checked, the camera read for the condensate attack those flues suffer. Same appointment discipline, same log, same two names on the van.
They arrived at the hour, laid the runners, and showed our daughter the camera screen while they worked — she now explains creosote to guests. The log from our third year caught a crown crack while it was small, and the spring visit fixed it for less than the sweep cost.
Five logs in a drawer, and the pattern is plain: our flue runs clean and the cap has held since 2019. It is a small shop doing exactly what it says, at the hour it says, twice a year — which in this trade makes them very nearly unique.
The jackdaw saga alone was worth the booking. Nest out in June once the fledglings had gone, cap on, log entry written like a nature diary. First frost came early and the fire drew perfectly — the almanac had said it would.
