Stringline layouts slabs the structural way: control joints spaced at twice the thickness in feet and never past twelve, cut a quarter of the depth within the first day, on a map you sign before we batch. 4,000 psi, air-entrained, early-entry sawed — crack distribution is a solved problem.
Early-entry sawing means the joint goes in within the first eight to twelve hours — before shrinkage starts looking for somewhere to live. On our slabs it is not an upgrade; it is the method, and it is in the number.

Commercial floors & slabs
Six-inch 4,000-psi placements on vapor barrier, power-troweled and measured for flatness — FF/FL numbers written into the contract, not promised in prose. Dock approaches, shop floors and the aisle slabs that carry a forklift eight hours a day.

Joint-map engineering
The rule is older than any of us: joint depth a quarter of the slab, spacing at most twice the thickness in FEET — ten feet on a five-inch drive, twelve on a six-inch floor, and never a panel past twelve however tempting the grid looks. We draw it, you sign it, the saw follows it within twelve hours.

Residential or county, the same physics: proof-rolled subbase, rebar chaired at eighteen inches on centre, broom or exposed-aggregate finish, and the joint map delivered with the invoice — framed or not, that drawing is the proof of the work.

Pour & early-entry
One continuous 4,000-psi placement; the early-entry saw follows the mapped joints inside the first shift, a quarter of the depth, before shrinkage picks its own places.
Cure, seal, file
Curing membrane the same day, 30%-solids seal at twenty-eight, and the joint map filed with the invoice — the drawing outlives the truck that poured it.
Two other bids had the words “control joints” in them somewhere. Stringline had a drawing with the joints on it, a depth note and a spacing note, and a sentence saying no panel would exceed twelve feet. Our floor has moved exactly where that drawing said it would, and nowhere else.
The county engineer asked who laid out our approach slab. That is a strange compliment and the best one a driveway will ever get.
They measured flatness with a meter and handed me the number on a card. FF forty-seven, contract said forty-five. I do not entirely know what it means and I know it is good.
The crew argued about a joint placement for ten minutes and then moved it two feet because of a drainage line none of us could see. That argument is what you are paying for.

Where do the joints actually go?
On the map you signed: depth a quarter of the slab, spacing at most twice the thickness in feet — so a five-inch drive joints at ten feet, a six-inch floor at twelve — with panels kept square-ish and the grid reconciled to doorways, columns and drains. Random cracking is what happens when this paragraph is skipped.
What is early-entry sawing?
A thin-blade saw that cuts the joint in the first eight to twelve hours, while the concrete is green enough that the cut provokes the crack instead of chasing it. Conventional sawing a day later works too — until the slab beats you to it overnight, once, expensively.
Do FF/FL numbers matter to a house drive?
Not to a broom drive — the numbers matter where a forklift or a pallet jack lives, which is why we write them into commercial contracts and not residential ones. A flatness promise in prose is a hope; on a meter card it is a fact.
Why twelve feet, never more?
Because shrinkage force accumulates with panel size, and past about twelve feet on typical residential mixes the concrete stops waiting for the joint. The rule costs a few extra saw cuts and saves the only crack that ever mattered.
How long is the drawing good for?
Sixty days at the quoted price, forever as a record. The joint map we file with your invoice is the same one the saw followed — when a surveyor asks in 2046, the answer is one phone call away.

Send dimensions and a photo — the estimate comes back with the joint map sketched on it, because a number without the geometry is half a number. Commercial layouts surveyed within three working days.
