Bid to the municipality or quoted straight to the property owner — same numbers, same sixty-day hold. Traffic control, domes, curing and the inspection walkthrough are inside the price; the only extra ever charged is rock we could not see, and we telephone before we dig it.

The questions come first here

Public work gets decided in a council meeting or a kitchen, quickly, off the answers to four questions — so the answers sit up here where the decision actually happens, not at the bottom of the page.

Why five-foot panels on sidewalk?

Because a sidewalk panel that runs long is a crack with a schedule. The old rule — joints at no more than twice the slab thickness in feet, and never past five on a four-inch walk — keeps every panel small enough to move honestly. We tool the joints while the concrete is green, so there is nothing sawed for the homeowner to look at and nowhere for a snowblower blade to catch.

Are the ADA ramps really inspected?

Twice — by us with a digital level against the 8.3-percent running grade and the 2-percent cross, and then by whoever your jurisdiction sends. The truncated domes are set with a fresh wet-mix dome mat while the surface is plastic, so they are integral, not glued and gone by spring. No ramp we have built has failed a third-party inspection.

Repair or replace the whole run?

We measure the run and tell you the truth: panels with quarter-inch lips get replaced, panels that are merely ugly get offered a grind-and-level option, and runs with base failure under them get rebuilt full depth. Councils appreciate that we bid it both ways; homeowners appreciate that we mostly recommend the smaller number.

How long is my street torn up?

Sidewalk moves in blocks — formed and poured one day, cured overnight, opened to foot traffic the next afternoon. Curb and gutter extrudes at walking pace behind the machine. Most residential jobs never close a lane to cars at all; when one must, the notice goes out before the forms do.

Four inches of 4,000-psi air-entrained concrete on compacted aggregate, joints tooled at five feet and corners cross-tooled so every panel is a panel. The broom runs across the fall, not with it — the difference between a walk that grips in February and one that glazes. Subgrade failures are dug and re-filled full depth, because a panel over a void is a trip hazard on a timer.

Curb & gutter, extruded to grade

A slipform curb machine pulls the 4,000-psi mix through at walking pace, struck to the string line and finished by hand behind — gutter pan poured monolithic so the back-of-curb drainage is one piece, not two that disagree at the seam. Splices land at expansion joints, never mid-span, and every run is cored for the drainage structure the drawing called for.

Ramps & driveway approaches

Ramps built to the measurement, not the interpretation: a 4-ft level landing at 2 percent or less, flares that slope only where they must, detectable domes set integral, and a detectable edge the full width. Approaches across the right-of-way get the valley gutter set to the crown of the road, so the driveway drains and the street does not know the driveway is there.

How it goes

Mobilize to inspection

The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.

  1. Day 0

    Notice & mobilize

    Residents lettered, traffic control set, utilities located and marked before a spade goes in. The measuring wheel and the digital level walk the run the afternoon before, and the panel map is drawn from what they say.

  2. Day 1

    Form, pour, extrude

    Forms pinned to the string line for walks and ramps; the curb machine pulls its run at walking pace behind. One continuous placement per block, 4,000-psi air-entrained, joints tooled while the crew is still on it.

  3. Overnight

    Cure & open

    Curing compound down the same afternoon, barricades off the next, foot traffic by the school walk. Panels reach design strength on the same chemistry as everything else we pour — the calendar, not the council schedule, decides.

  4. Final day

    Domes, level, inspect

    Truncated domes set and checked full-width, running grades read on the digital level against the 8.3, gutter pans flooded with a hose to prove the drainage — then the walk-through with the inspector, and the sign-off before the crew leaves.

Three seasons of sidewalk phases and not one callback on a panel lip. Their crew tooled the joints at five feet without being asked, which sounds small until you have paid to grind a two-mile run of somebody else’s seven-foot panels.
