How it goes
From first call to first dinner outside
The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.
Day 1
The site visit
Forty minutes in your yard with a tape, a level and the county frost chart. You get a written feasibility read and a budget band before we leave — free, and yours to keep whoever builds the deck.
Week 1
The drawing and the number
A scaled plan with your table, chairs and grill drawn on it, plus a materials list you could hand to any builder. One price, fixed, carrying the slope, the access and the frost already.
Week 2
Footings
Augered and poured at 48 inches — below the frost line this county publishes, not the one a builder guesses at. Corner posts first; they carry the most and forgive the least.
Weeks 3–4
Frame, boards, rails
Pressure-treated frame at twelve-inch centres, blocking under every rail post, boards gapped for this climate rather than the brochure. The crew that starts your deck finishes it.

Every fastener checked, edges photographed for the warranty file, care sheet in writing — and the first dinner outside is, traditionally, the one we get invited to.

Three of the forty-odd reviews in the shop binder — the binder comes to the site visit if you would rather read them all.
Two other builders quoted us off a photograph. Hartswell came out, found the old patio drain nobody knew about, and moved two footings to save it — inside the fixed price. The composite still looks like the day they swept it off.
The drawing had our table and chairs on it before it had the boards. That is the whole difference — the deck fits the dinners we actually have, and the benches they built in seat twelve without anyone touching a lawn chair.
They dug to four feet in February and told me exactly why while they did it. Deck went down in March, gate still swings with one finger in October, and the warranty folder is the most organized thing in my house.
Before you call
The questions every yard asks
Fourteen years of site visits distilled. If yours is not here, call the shop — the person who answers has dug most of the footings.
How much deck can my yard actually hold?
More than most people think, and less than some salesmen say. The site visit answers it with a tape and the setback map: coverage limits, easements and the distance to the lot line set the outer shape before any budget does.
Composite, cedar or ipe — honestly?
Composite for the low-Saturdays life, cedar for the smell and the silver it fades to, ipe for the fifty-year play at double the price. We quote all three on the same drawing and install all three well, so the answer is genuinely yours.
What happens if it rains during the build?
Nothing that costs you money. The schedule slips, the price does not — weather days are built into every fixed quote we write, which is why the quote is a band of days and not a single promise.
Do you take down the old deck?
Yes, and haul it — as its own line on the quote. Most old decks around the valley are tired at the post base and the ledger, which are exactly the two parts we are pickiest about, so the demolition usually tells us what the yard needs.
