Three ways we build
Composite, done properly
Trex and TimberTech lines we have installed for a decade — boards gapped for this climate rather than the brochure, joists at 12-inch centres under any diagonal pattern, and a picture-frame border so no cut end ever faces the yard. Installed from $62 per square foot.
Western red cedar
Kiln-dried 5/4×6 cedar, face-screwed and plugged, finished on all four sides before a single board goes down — the deck that smells like the first warm weekend. From $54 per square foot, oiled at handover on request.
Pergolas, rails & built-ins
Cedar pergolas to 14-foot spans on steel ties, aluminum and cable rail installed with the blocking code asks for, and bench, planter and privacy carpentry drawn into the original plan rather than bolted on after it.

How it goes
From first call to first cookout
The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.
Day 1
The site visit
Forty minutes on your yard with a tape, a level and the county frost-depth chart. You leave with a written feasibility read and a budget band — free, and yours to keep whoever builds it.
Week 1
Drawings & a fixed number
A scaled plan with your furniture on it, a materials list you could hand anyone, and one price that already carries the slope, the access and the frost. It moves only if you change the plan.
Week 2
Footings first
Helical piers or sono-tubes to 42 inches — below the frost line the county measures by. No deck we have built has ever heaved, which is a boring sentence we are proud of.
Weeks 3–4
Frame, boards, rails
Pressure-treated frame, blocking at every rail post, boards fastened to the manufacturer's spec for this climate. The crew that starts your deck is the crew that finishes it.

Every fastener checked, edges photographed for the warranty file, care instructions in writing — and the first cookout is traditionally ours to lose.

What the neighbours keep saying
Our last deck was nine years of splinters and a list of excuses. Ridgeline's site visit found the frost problem the old builder missed, and the fix was inside the fixed price. Year six now — the gate still closes with one finger.
They showed up when the calendar said, left the yard cleaner than they found it, and the cedar still collects compliments from the neighbours who watched it go up. The plugged screws alone sold the guy next door.
The pergola drawing matched the pergola on the lawn to the inch — I checked, because the last crew had made me cynical. Twenty minutes at handover, a warranty folder, and they called in October to ask how it wintered.
Straight answers
Composite or cedar — which one lasts?
Both outlive their warranties when the framing is right. Composite carries 25–30 years and asks for a wash; cedar asks for oil every second spring and ages the way people photograph. We quote both on the same drawing — the yard usually decides.
What does a deck cost around here?
Most of our composite decks land between $62 and $78 per square foot installed; cedar runs $54 to $68. Rail, stairs and slope move the number, which is why the fixed quote follows the site visit rather than the phone call.
Do you build through the winter?
Footings go in until the ground locks, framing follows in any dry window, and boards wait for temperatures the manufacturers will stand behind. A deck started in November is typically cooking by Memorial Day.
What exactly does the warranty cover?
Twenty-five years on structure — posts, frame and the attachment to the house — plus the manufacturer's full term on the boards. It transfers when you sell, and it has paid out exactly twice in fourteen years, both within the week.
