Wired before boarded
The lighting schematic is drawn with the frame, and the runs go under the joists before a single board is fastened. Adding light to a finished deck costs double and looks like the afterthought it is — ours is infrastructure, not a renovation.
Pergolas to the real snow load
Engineered to the county’s 40 psf with the map open on the drawing table, not the catalogue’s shade assumption. Rafters are counted to carry January and the vine you plan to grow on them.
One price, before the hole
A fixed quote with the pier count, rail footage and lamp count itemized. It moves only if you move the drawing — and the dusk visit is where the drawing gets made.

Composite evening decks — from $60/sq ft
The capped families that stay cool underfoot when the sun is off them, gapped to the valley’s humidity, hidden clips, and a picture-frame border mitred at every corner so the last of the light lands on an edge, never a cut end.

Cedar & ipe — from $55 and $97/sq ft
Cedar for the smell of the first warm evening and the silver it fades to; air-dried ipe for the fifty-year hardwood play. Both finished on all four sides before they are fastened, and quoted beside the composite on one drawing.

Pergolas & shade canopies — from $7,400
Freestanding or attached, engineered to 40 psf, with rafters spaced to the shade cloth or the vine — and the low-voltage heads aimed so the table glows rather than the fixtures do.

Rails, skirting & lighting — from $118/ln ft
Cable and aluminum rail with the blocking code asks for, skirting that hides the frame without trapping moisture, and warm-white post caps, rail strips and riser lights on a switch by the door.

The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.
Visit 1 — at dusk
The evening read
We come at the hour you will actually use the yard: where the sun exits, where the wind carries the grill smoke, where the table wants to sit in the last of the light. You keep the sketch and the budget band, whoever builds.
Week 1
The drawing & the fixed number
A scaled plan with your table on it, the lamp count marked, the pier count printed — and one price that carries the slope, the access and the frost line. It moves only if you move the plan.
Week 2
Piers & frame
Helical piers torqued to the gauge reading in your folder — no concrete trucks, no cure days, no spoil on the garden — then the frame at twelve-inch centres with blocking at every rail post.
Handover
The lighting walk
Heads aimed, rail strips set, the switch placed by the door and the timer set to the season. The care sheet and the schematic go in the folder — then we leave, and the first evening is yours to aim.
They came at six in the evening with a light meter, which I thought was theatre until they showed me where my table would sit in shade at seven — and moved the deck four feet to catch the last hour. Nobody else even asked what time we eat.
The pergola rafters were counted for the January snow before they were counted for the vine, and the stair lights aim at the risers so you never see a fixture. Eight pm is now the best hour this yard has ever had.
Fixed price, pier count printed, lamps on the schedule — the handover folder reads like the build had already happened. First dusk we flipped the switch by the door and the whole rail line came up warm.

The four that come up on every evening appointment — answered with wiring diagrams and snow-load arithmetic rather than mood lighting.
Can you light a deck that already exists?
Retrofits are half our autumn book. Post caps and rail strips surface-mount cleanly; a proper run under the boards means lifting one row, which we quote flat. What we will not do is sell you solar caps for a shaded yard — they are honest hardware in the sun and fiction under maples.
Isn’t a pergola just shade?
A pergola is a loaded structure that happens to make shade. Ours are engineered to the county’s 40-psf snow load with the vine’s live load counted in, and attached to the house on structural hardware — or drawn freestanding when the wall says no. Garden decoration is what the un-engineered kind becomes in February.
Helical piers next to my old foundation — safe?
Safer than an auger. Helicals install with no excavation and no soil surcharge against a basement wall, and every pier is torque-verified to a written reading. When the county wants a letter for a tight setback, our engineer writes one.
Does composite hold heat in the evening?
The dark uncapped boards do — they are a griddle at two in the afternoon. The capped lighter families we specify shed the day’s heat by early evening, which is exactly when you plan to be out there. We lend samples and tell you to leave them in the sun and check at seven.
