How a line goes in

Braces first, wire second, always

High-tensile wire holds two thousand pounds of pull forever, which is exactly as long as a bad brace holds it. The build order is not negotiable, and it is why our lines are still tight a decade on.

The ground read

Soil, rock and the water table decide post depth and brace geometry — a driven post in gravel holds differently than an augered one in clay, and the drawing says which before the truck rolls.

Braces & assemblies

H-braces built to the sheet: horizontal set diagonal to the pull, tensioned with wire not nails, and pinned into the earth the way the county engineer draws it. Every foot of wire hangs off this afternoon.

String & tension

Line paid out by spinners, tensioned by in-line strainer to the gauge — read with a meter, not a palm. Staples set to pin, not pinch, so the wire breathes through the seasons instead of singing in the wind.

Energise & meter

Offsets hung at the heights the pressure reads, the energiser earthed into wet soil with the rod count the manual asks for, and every strand metered at the far corner. The reading goes in your folder beside the fence map.

The rotational paddock

One perimeter, sixteen paddocks, and the carrying capacity your agronomist keeps drawing on the whiteboard. Interior splits run on quick-release reels so the herd moves in an afternoon, and the whole geometry is planned around water, shade and the lane — not the shortest distance between two corners.

The hard boundary

Where the property meets the road, the forest or the neighbour’s bulls, the line changes species: taller woven wire, heavier posts, and offsets that carry the lesson on the outside face. This is the fence the county assessor photographs when he argues your land is well kept.

The old barbed line needed a weekend of my life every spring. The Wapiti HT run has needed one strainer click in three years — and I can strip the offsets and move the reel splits myself when the rotation changes. It is the first fence on this place that works for me rather than the other way round.

The wire questions

Why high-tensile instead of barbed?

Barbed controls by pain and fails by design — it slackens, it snags stock, and it demands an annual weekend. High-tensile controls by rigidity: tensioned to the gauge it stands like a wall, it is safer for horses and calves, it costs less per year across its life, and one strainer click restores a decade of stretch.

What maintenance does an HT line actually ask?

A walk with a voltmeter after the first hard frost and once each spring, grass control under the energised stands, and occasionally a strainer quarter-turn. Our folder gives you the map, the readings to expect and the two minutes it takes to check them — the same walk we would sell you as a service, taught instead.

Will elk and deer break it?

A five-strand HT line with game offsets turns elk the day the lead cow reads the strand — and woven wire at the crossing points handles the rest. What none of it survives is a hit at speed, which is why we map the crossings at the ground read and build the visible, forgiving geometry there instead of the rigid one.

Can we add the paddocks later?

Yes, and most do. The perimeter is engineered to carry the strain of interior splits from day one — anchor assemblies at the planned split points, strainer access left clear — so the rotational geometry bolts onto the line you already own rather than fighting it.
