The honest arithmetic
Cedar is cheaper on day one. Day one is short.
We install cedar fences for people who enjoy staining them — and for a few yards that deserve it. For everyone else, here is the twenty-year math on a hundred-foot line: materials, our labour, and the Saturdays the wood will ask for. Both quotes come on the same visit, and neither one gets a hard sell.

Every photograph is a Hollis line at least a year old. Vinyl photographs best after a winter — the cheap ones have gone chalky by then — so ask for the address of one near you.

Day 1
The walk & the quote
We walk the line, pull the plat, call 811 and hand you a fixed quote with the wind rating printed on it. The quote holds for sixty days, and the locates are already filed before you sign.
Set day
Posts to frost, reinforced
Augered to 48 inches at the lake and set in concrete, with steel reinforcement carried into every gate post and the bottom rail — the two places a vinyl line is asked to be something other than plastic.
Build day
Panels, caps, gates
Rails locked onto a level string, caps and collars set, gates hung on welded steel frames with self-closing hardware graded for daily use. The hose comes out at the end — that is the whole care plan.

Gates & latches re-set
Vinyl settles a little in its first month. We come back, re-square every gate and re-set every latch — and the 30-year warranty transfers to your buyer the day you sell.

I stained the cedar fence at our old house five times in eighteen years and swore off the ritual. The Hollis line is three winters old, gets hosed twice a summer, and still looks like the brochure — the neighbour has stopped staining theirs too.
The architectural committee rejected our first choice and approved the Hollis sample in one meeting — the lattice detail matched the 1994 covenants better than the original drawings did. Set in a day and a half, gate tuned twice.
The September gusts that leaned two fences on this road took nothing from ours — the reinforced bottom rail and the extra post were on the quote, priced, and worth it. The twenty-year math they printed turned out to be the honest version.

Does vinyl get brittle in winter?
Modern ASTM F964 profiles are engineered for the cold — the compound flexes well past anything a Sandy Cross January asks of it. Brittleness belongs to the off-brand thinwall stuff; our profiles carry the transferable 30-year warranty precisely because they do not do it.
What about wind off the lake?
Privacy vinyl is a sail, so we treat it like one: a printed wind rating on every quote, steel in the bottom rail, and post spacing tightened on exposed lots. Our lines were standing after the ’23 September gusts took two others on the lake road.
Can vinyl follow a slope?
Racked sections handle about twelve inches of fall per panel; steeper grades get a stepped plan you approve on the drawing, or an aluminum accent line that racks twice as far. The walk of the line decides, and the quote says which and why.
Cedar really is cheaper — why not just do that?
Day one, yes; decade two, no. The arithmetic two sections up is the whole answer — we quote both lines on the same visit and have built cedar for neighbours who genuinely like the stain ritual.
