Lake water loads every square foot of an eight-foot basement wall with forty to sixty pounds through a spring melt — quietly, evenly, for weeks. Meerwold installs two honest routes through that pressure: the interior system that relieves it, the exterior membrane that refuses it, and a sump built on the assumption that the power quits exactly when the water peaks.

Interior — relieve the pressure

A channel cut inside the footing, collecting water at every cold joint before it reaches the floor, all of it daylit into a sealed basin running the 2+1 system: a mains primary, a battery secondary on its own float, a high-water alarm that texts two phones, and — where the lot allows — a gravity overflow to daylight. No excavation, no deck torn up, no lakeshore garden lost. It manages water that has arrived, which is the honest fix when the walls are sound and the pressure comes from below.

Exterior — refuse it at the wall

The wall opened to the footing in a four-foot working strip, a dimple membrane bonded to the concrete, drainage composite and clean stone backfilled behind, the grade reinstated on top. It stops water from ever touching the wall, which no interior system can promise — at the price of the dig: the strip is not gentle on what sits inside it. The honest fix for lake splash, historic stone, and water coming through the wall itself rather than under it.

The 2+1 doctrine

One pump is a bet, and the melt always calls it on the worst night of the year. Every basin we close runs a primary on mains, a secondary on its own battery and float, an alarm that texts two phones, and a gravity line where the lot allows one. Any single part can fail at two in the morning and the floor stays dry — written for ten years against the installation log.

Neither route is a product — they answer different water. The map we draw at the first visit traces where the moisture actually arrives: through the wall says membrane, under the floor says drain and sump, and the Gullside houses that get both are the 1960s additions where a porch now sits exactly where an exterior dig would need to go. We price whichever routes are live options and install the one the readings name — including, twice a season, neither.

Channel at the footing, collection at every cold joint and window well, daylit to the sealed 2+1 basin. Hydrostatic pressure under the floor is relieved instead of fought — the water is given somewhere better to go than your floor, and nothing outside the house is touched to do it.

The exterior membrane

Opened to the footing, dimple board bonded to the wall, composite drainage and clean stone backfilled, grade restored. Water is refused at the face of the concrete — the stronger promise, bought with a dig — and the lakeshore houses with historic stone get this one because their walls deserve it.

Every April the melt opens the same hairlines it opened last year. Hydrophilic urethane goes in low and reacts with the water in the crack, foaming into a gasket that swells against moisture instead of surrendering to it — cured in an hour, flexible for decades, dry the same day.

How the calendar runs

The lake year

Water around the Mere keeps a schedule, so the works keep one too — from the first thaw to the re-read a full lake year later.

  1. The thaw

    The melt reading

    Moisture map of every wall, tide lines photographed and dated, downspout discharge traced through the thaw, and the sump — if there is one — scoped and cycle-timed through a bucket test. The map, not the salesman, picks the route.

  2. Weeks 1–2

    The free half

    Downspout extensions, a regraded swale, window-well drains, a clean check valve. If the cheap half answers the water, the job can honestly end here — around the lake it ends here more than people expect.

  3. Weeks 3–6

    The works

    Injection for the cracks the melt opened; the channel and the 2+1 basin under the floor; the membrane and the stone outside it where the map said so. One crew the whole way, plastic to the stairs, the log growing as the work does.

  4. The first storm

    The trial

    The system sits its exam the first hard rain after install. We ask every household for one photo: the floor, the morning after. Dry is the report we file — and the one we frame at the shop.

  5. Month 12

    The re-read

    The map is run again beside the original, the alarm fired on battery, the pump cycles timed. Two maps, same instruments, one expected answer — that is what the ten-year warranty is made of.

Two outfits before them sold me an interior drain from the doorway. Meerwold’s map showed the water arriving through the north wall, not under the floor — so the membrane was the honest route and it cost less than the drain quote I nearly signed. They talked me out of their own cheaper product, which is when I stopped phoning anyone else.

The melt of 2024 put four inches across the boathouse floor and killed the pump doing it. The 2+1 basin went in that June; the melt of 2026 quit the power at one in the morning, the battery secondary took it without waking us, and the alarm texted both our phones out of courtesy. The floor was dry in socks by seven.

Interior or exterior — which one lasts?

Both, installed right, outlive the mortgage; they answer different water. The interior system manages pressure that has arrived beneath the floor; the membrane refuses water at the face of the wall itself. What fails early is the mismatch — a drain fighting water coming through the wall, a membrane wrapped around a floor that floods from below. The melt map decides which failure you actually have, and we price both wherever both are live.

What does hydrostatic pressure actually do down there?

Saturated ground turns into a reservoir pressing on everything below grade — forty to sixty pounds on every square foot of an eight-foot wall through a melt, and the same push upward under the floor. It is what bows walls, cracks slabs and lifts water through cold joints on the low side of the lake. You can seal against it, drain to relieve it or regrade to starve it — you cannot paint over it.

Is the exterior dig worth the garden it takes?

It takes a four-foot strip along the elevation, sheeted and hand-dug around anything worth keeping, and it is not gentle on what sits inside it — we say so before you sign, not after. What it buys is the only promise an interior system cannot make: the water never touches the wall. Lakeshore stone, splash-zone render and through-the-wall seepage get the dig. Everything else usually gets the drain.

Why two pumps and a battery?

Because the storm that floods a finished basement is almost never a capacity problem — it is the night the power quits, the float sticks or the jam happens at two in the morning. A primary on mains, a secondary on its own battery and float, an alarm that texts two phones, check valves each side: the failure of any one part becomes a log entry instead of a claim. Around a lake, that is the whole design brief.

How fast can you get here in the melt?

Water arriving today gets the melt line and same-day triage, all season — pump swaps, check valves, getting water moving before anything is papered. Full readings run inside the week after the melt settles, and the works calendar opens as the ground dries, which is why the sensible calls happen in February.
