Amberg & Kohl picks the honest fight for each wall: carbon-fiber staples where the wall bends but the footing holds, helical piers where the ground underneath has quit. We show the arithmetic both ways, because the wall does not get a vote on which one it would prefer.

When the wall bends and the footing holds

The case for staples — $150 each

A wall bowing inward under two inches, on a footing the laser says has not dropped, is bending — not sinking. Slots are cut across the failure, carbon-fiber staples are epoxied in every fourth course, and the wall is stiffened where it stands: ten times the restraint of surface straps, zero excavation, finished flush under paint. Count them with us: a 24-foot run at 16-inch spacing is eighteen staples. That is the whole number — and it is usually a quarter of the pier quote a scared homeowner was handed first.

When the ground has quit

The case for piers — $1,840 each

When stair-step cracks march below the grade line and the slab profile drops toward the same corner, the wall is not bending — it is following the footing down. Steel helical shafts are screwed through the weak clay to the strata beneath, bracketed under the footing one lift at a time, every pier torqued to refusal and logged. It costs what it costs because it is the only one of the two answers that carries the house. The torque log goes in your binder, and the twenty-five-year warranty follows the deed.

The wrong cheap answer is expensive

Staples on a sinking wall slow the bend and hide the cause; piers on a bending wall buy steel the wall never needed. Our survey says which fight you are in before either number is written — and if the honest answer is neither, you get told that instead.

The deflection string says how far the wall leans and where it leans worst; the slab profile says whether the footing beneath it is leaving. Bend with a level footing reads staples. Drop under a bending wall reads piers. Everything anybody has ever tried to sell this moor is sales talk around those two numbers. The $265 survey is credited to whichever fight the numbers name.

Carbon-fiber staples across courses that bend, three-inch channel slab-to-joist where the bow sits high or the outside is a patio worth keeping. Both leave the wall held where it stands — never pushed, cracked and called fixed — and both disappear under a coat of paint the same week.

The moor holds water like a sponge and squeezes it against you every spring. We cut the interior drain, daylit to a sealed basin running a mains primary, a battery secondary on its own float, a high-water alarm — and a gravity overflow to daylight for the storm that outlasts both.

    The string and the laser

    Deflection strings slab-to-joist on every wall that leans, a laser profile of the slab, gauges on every crack. You keep the raw readings — the fight is chosen on these numbers or not at all.

  2. Day 3

    The arithmetic on one page

    Staples and piers priced against your actual deflection and footing profile, side by side, with the survey note saying which one the wall is asking for. No bundles, no tiers — one honest number per route.

  3. Weeks 2–5

    The fight

    Slots cut and staples epoxied, or shafts screwed and brackets torqued — one crew, one system at a time, plastic run to the stairs every night. Every torque and every gauge reading goes in the log as the work happens.

  4. Month 12

    The re-string

    The same strings, the same laser, the same hour of the day. The moor gets a full year to argue back before we call it settled — and the before-and-after sheets go in your binder side by side.

The first quote wanted eleven piers and a second mortgage. Amberg strung the wall, profiled the slab, and showed us the footing had not moved a millimetre in thirty years — the wall was bending, not sinking. Eighteen staples, one day of work, a quarter of the price. The kicker: they pointed out the two cracks that did need watching, and came back a year later to check them for free.

Our cottage had dropped visibly at the north corner — doors swinging, cracks you could post a letter through. Fourteen piers in five days, the torque log in a binder with our name on it, and the after-profile sits inside a millimetre of level. The surveyor who came for the remortgage asked to keep a copy of the log.

How do you actually decide staples or piers?

Two readings decide it, not a preference. The deflection string says how far and where the wall bends; the slab profile says whether the footing under it has dropped. Bend with a sound footing buys staples — the wall is stiffened where it stands. Drop under a bending wall buys piers — the ground has to be carried past the weak clay. Everything else is sales talk around those two numbers.

Will the bow come back after stapling?

Not measurably, when the diagnosis was right — the carbon carries ten times the restraint the wall lost, and the re-string at month twelve is on our calendar before the crew leaves. If the wall was misread and the footing is actually sinking, no staple on earth holds it, which is exactly why the survey comes first and the staple count second.

What is refusal torque, in plain words?

The point where screwing the pier deeper stops being easy — the strata pushing back hard enough to carry your house. Every pier is torqued to it and the figure is logged per pier, so the proof of the work is a column of numbers you can hand to any engineer, surveyor or buyer who ever asks.

How messy is the work itself?

Staples cut a slot every fourth course — dust and a shop vac, done in a day or two. Piers open a doormat-sized pit at the footing with a machine that fits through a garden gate. The drain is the longest: a week of channel cutting with the floor sheeted to the stairs. We sequence the loud days together and tell you which they are before we start.

Do you take small jobs?

A single weeping crack is a legitimate morning’s work, priced by the foot like everything else. What we will not do is stretch a small job into a big one — the survey that says six feet of urethane and nothing else is the same document that says nine piers, and both get the same binder.
