A spring-balanced door spends a consumable on every cycle; a counterweighted one spends nothing but pivot grease. For a door that opens six times a day, springs are honest engineering. For the hall that opens thirty times a day, hanging the door’s own weight in cast iron beside the frame is the difference between a service contract and a service marriage. We design both, print the cycle arithmetic side by side, and let your door’s odometer pick.
The duty-officer sign-off
Every Windlass install ends with a documented pull test — ten full cycles under load, balance drift measured at the drum, safety reversal proven with the county’s own test block — and the officer of the day countersigns the commissioning sheet. The invoice follows the signature, never the truck.

Fire-hall sectionals — the 100,000-cycle line
Heavy-duty sectional doors with internal struts at every stile, weight-matched balancing, and battery-driven reserve operation for the hour the siren sounds and the street does not. Commissioned with the pull test, warranted by the cycle, and serviced on a calendar the hall keeps anyway.

Rolling service shutters — the parade, Garrowpoint
Galvanised steel curtains that close in seconds and shrug off decades of salt air; push-up for the florist, chain hoist for the grocer, tubular motor for the bakery that opens at four. See-through grilles where a dark window would sell nothing.

Counterweight & heritage re-hangs — the Millward flats
The flats are full of beautiful doors hanging on 1930s ingenuity and 1970s neglect. We re-hang the original leaves on new track and hidden counterweight sets — the face untouched, the physics replaced — and the conservation officer approves a drawing, never a description.

Loading docks & program doors
Dock doors rated to the forklift schedule rather than the brochure: impactable bottom sections, spring assemblies sized from your gate log’s real cycle count, and a quarterly inspection that files its report before your insurer asks for one.
THE DUTY LINE — (555) 073-8815 — a hall door that will not close is a truck that cannot leave. Dispatch answers around the clock for contracted buildings, and the four-hour response standard is in the service agreement, not the brochure.

From duty survey to countersigned commission
The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.
Week 0 — the duty survey
Cycles counted, not guessed
We read the gate log or the duty roster and count what the door actually does in a year, measure the opening and the headroom, and photograph everything the conservation officer will ask about. The survey report is yours to tender with, whoever wins the work.
Weeks 1–3 — engineering
Balancing chosen by arithmetic
Spring cycles against counterweight against motor duty, printed side by side with their twenty-year costs. Struts, drums and safety systems drawn to the measured loads. You approve a drawing that already carries its maintenance calendar.
The install — one shutdown day
Planned around the siren
Old door out and gone, new track set to the masonry, the leaf stacked and balanced, reserve operation proven with the test block. Halls keep a bay live throughout — our truck never blocks the one that answers.

Ten cycles, measured, signed
Ten loaded cycles with drift measured at the drum, reversal proven, manual and reserve operation walked through with the crew that will use them at 3 a.m. The duty officer countersigns, and the warranty and the service calendar start from that pen.

Our old door failed its reversal test in a county audit and the hall was limited to manual operation. Windlass surveyed on the Tuesday, engineered against our actual call log, and commissioned on a day we kept one bay live the whole time. The duty book has their pull test in it now, and the inspector asked for a copy.
Every shutter man on the parade wanted to sell me motors. Windlass read our opening hours, put a push-up curtain on the florist and a chain hoist on the grocer, and said the bakery was the only shop that earned a motor. Three storefronts, three right answers, one invoice that matched the drawing.
The carriage arch is the face of the building and the conservation officer said “like for like or nothing”. They re-hung the 1932 leaf on counterweights hidden in the side walls — from the street nothing changed, and the door three men used to shove now rises with two fingers on a chain.

Springs or counterweights — which does our building need?
Count the cycles. Under about ten openings a day, a high-cycle spring pair is cheaper to buy and cheaper to keep, and we will say so. Above that, the counterweight set wins the twenty-year arithmetic on paper and in the maintenance ledger — we print both sides by default.
Can you work around a hall that cannot stop answering calls?
Yes — it is the normal condition, not the exception. Installs keep a bay live throughout, sequencing is planned with the duty officer, and on heritage arches we rig temporary closures that clear in seconds. The truck never parks in front of the door that answers.
What is a pull test and why does the officer sign it?
Ten full cycles under load with the balance drift measured at the drum, reversal proven with the county test block, and the reserve operation run the way a 3 a.m. crew would run it. The countersignature says the door in the wall is the door on the drawing — and it is what starts our warranty clock.
Do you service doors you did not install?
Constantly — half the works book is other people’s doors on maintenance contracts. The survey reads what is there, the report says what it needs, and nothing gets replaced that a part would honestly fix. Any make, any decade, including the ones nobody supports anymore.
How do tenders work with your quotes?
The survey report and the engineering drawing are written to be attached to a tender as-is, with the cycle arithmetic shown. If a competitor wins on an honest number, the town still ends up with a properly specified door — which is the point of the exercise.
