The same five moves on every engineered job — the only variable is how honest the opening turns out to be once the trim comes off.

Monday — the survey

Opening, headroom and side room to the sixteenth — and, out here, the part that matters: exposure. Distance to open ground, the fetch across it, what the county wind map says your door must hold.

Tuesday — the engineering sheet

Design pressure, strut spacing, anchor sizes, glazing type: one page your insurer can read, signed by us, filed with the certificate. What gets built is what got stamped.

Wednesday–Thursday — the build

Sections assembled to the sheet, the door weighed at the bench so the torsion pair is matched to actual pounds, and the anchor kit packed to the schedule — never to a driver’s judgement.

Friday — the calm-day hang

We schedule inside a weather window, because the Prairie gets enough surprises without a half-hung door. Old door out, anchors set, tracks dead plumb before the first section rides them.

Before we leave — the pull test

A firm outward pull on the closed door proves the envelope holds; then the balance test, waist height, watched. You sign both, and the wind warranty runs from that signature.

The prairie position

Rated before it is priced

An inland installer picks a door from a rack and hopes; out here, a door that fails fails outward, at night, in the middle of the insurance year. Crosswind has hung openings on this flat ground since 1991, and the rule from the first season survives: the wind map decides the door, the scale decides the spring, and the certificate says so on paper. It costs a survey visit, and it is the entire difference between a door and a claim.

    We read the county map at your opening, not in the truck: design wind speed, exposure class, the fetch across open prairie. The map decides the door; we only write down what it says.

  2. The engineering sheet

    One page, three signatures

    Design pressure, struts, anchors, glazing — signed by us, filed with the certificate, kept with your deed. When the adjuster asks in March, the answer is a document, not a memory.

  3. The bench weigh-in

    Springs matched to pounds

    A rated door is a heavy door: doubled stiles and struts add real weight. The torsion pair is specified to what the door weighs on the scale, in the cycle rating its storm seasons demand.

  4. The calm-day hang

    Anchors, then sections

    The anchor schedule goes in first — to the studs, to the sheet. Only then does the door stack, because a wind-rated door on field-drilled anchors is a certificate with nothing behind it.

  5. Commissioning

    The pull test & the balance

    Outward pull on the closed door — it holds its envelope. Opener off, door to waist height — it stays. You watch both; the ten-year wind warranty starts at the second signature.

Design pressure, strut spacing, anchor sizes, glazing — one engineering page, signed twice. If the door that hangs on your house differs from that page in any particular, the difference is ours to make right, storm season included.

Why the certificate matters more than the door

The storm that tests a rated door also tests the paperwork, and the paperwork is what the claim turns on: an adjuster who cannot see a design pressure on paper treats the opening as unrated regardless of what survived. Every Crosswind install files the certificate with your deed, names the strut schedule and the anchor sizes, and gets handed to your broker before the first June line forms on the horizon. The door holds the wind; the file holds the door.

The June 2025 line-wind took the neighbour’s door into the county road and left ours shut with the certificate still taped inside the jamb. The adjuster had never seen an engineering sheet for a garage door before. He photographed it like wildlife.

Questions from the flat ground

What does DP+50 actually mean?

That the door assembly was tested to hold fifty pounds per square foot of wind pressure — roughly what a sustained ninety-plus-mile-an-hour gust delivers at exposure — without the section leaving its guides. Your number comes off the county wind map and your opening size, which is why the survey exists: DP is read off the house, not picked off a menu.

Does a rated door change my insurance?

Usually in the good direction. Wind-mitigation credits reward documented openings, and the certificate we file is written for exactly that inspection. Prairie clients routinely see the survey pay for itself inside two renewal cycles — hand your broker the sheet before you file it.

Can you rate the door I already own?

Sometimes: a sound sectional can gain struts, hardware and a certification if its skins and stiles are honest, and the survey says so plainly. When it cannot, we say that plainly too. The sheet only gets stamped for doors that will actually hold it.

Why do the springs matter more out here?

Two reasons: a rated door is heavier — doubled stiles and struts are real pounds — and storm seasons cycle it harder, battening down and checking the yard. So the pair is weighed at the bench and wound to the cycle rating the calendar demands: 50,000 where the wind owns three months a year.

Belt or chain on a rated door?

Belt wherever a room shares the wall — under sixty decibels, and immune to the harmonic howl a chain picks up in a wind. Chain for detached barns and the heaviest doors, where louder and tougher is the honest trade. Both are on the card, quoted side by side.
