The shop on Quay Lane
Two welding bays, a plasma table, a blasting cabinet — and, unusually for a shop this size, a patina room beside the powder line, because weathering steel asked for its own. Gates leave here framed on jigs, square to the diagonal; guards leave physically tested to the code load with the date written on the drawing. The quays eat metal for breakfast, and everything we build is chosen to still be standing at the retirement party of whoever commissioned it.
Finished for the weather it will live in
Within fifty metres of salt water, nothing leaves bare: hot-dip galvanized, zinc-rich primer, powder baked over the lot. Tell us where the piece will stand and the finish is decided by the map, not the mood.

The same card the quays’ contractors price from. Gates are quoted per leaf after the measure, because a five-metre leaf in a gale is engineering before it is arithmetic — and the finish line of the card is a conversation about where the piece lives, not an upcharge.

Patina, powder or galvanized?
The finish decides how the metal spends its thirtieth birthday. These are the four questions that decide the finish — and the fifth everyone asks about the Creed.
What is a patina finish, really?
Weathering steel — Corten and its cousins — forms its own dense oxide layer instead of rusting through: seal-brown within a season, then essentially still for decades. It is honest, self-healing and beautiful. It also stains whatever its run-off drains onto, so it belongs on gravel, grass and its own footing, not above a pale stone terrace.
So why does most of your work leave powder-coated?
Because powder over hot-dip galvanizing is the quiet best-seller: the zinc sacrifices itself to the weather for thirty or forty years and the baked colour simply sits there looking new. Patina is for the places its brown streaks will read as character; powder-and-zinc is for everywhere else, in any colour the card offers.
Does stainless never rust?
It stains, on the coast, where salt sits on it unwiped — tea-coloured freckling that a cloth and a spring afternoon remove. We weld it with backing gas so the beads themselves do not orange, which is the failure you see on cheap quay furniture. Maintained minimally, it outlasts the building it is bolted to.
How do you test a guard without breaking it?
The code asks a rail to take a 200-pound push at the top and fifty pounds per foot along it. We build past both, then apply exactly that with a gauge on our floor — proof without damage — and write the date on the drawing. It has been asked for twice on site in thirty-six years, and both times the answer was already in the folder.
Why sign every quote?
Because the Creed is not wall art. “Built for the retirement party of whoever commissioned it” is a schedule, a finish schedule, and a refusal to save a client twenty dollars in the place it will cost them two thousand. Ruth signs the quotes so you know whose name is on the promise.

Day 1
The measure
Tape, laser, photographs of every anchoring surface — and the finish conversation, held on the spot, about where the piece will spend its life.
Week 1
The drawing and the number
A dimensioned shop drawing, load rating on its face, finish schedule on the back, fixed price on the bottom — signed by Ruth, as the Creed requires.
Weeks 2–3
The floor
Plasma-cut parts, frames pinned on jigs, MIG where the load lives, TIG where the eye lands. Every structural weld laid by a certified hand and logged.
Week 4
The finish
Blasted to near-white; then galvanize-and-powder, seeded patina, or clear-coat over mill scale — whichever the map and the conversation chose.
Install day
The hang
Anchors torqued to spec, gates cycled a hundred times, guards gauged to the code load. The folder, the drawings and the swept floor all left with you.
Ruth quoted us a patina gate for the gravel court and talked herself out of it — the run-off would have streaked the pale stone within a winter. Galvanized, powdered the colour of the boathouse doors, ten years and counting. That is what the Creed turns out to mean in practice.
Our stringers arrived drilled, notched and load-rated, and the crane was off hire by lunch. The drawings were better than the engineer’s own detail — he kept one, he said, for reference.
A railing for my mother’s steps, powder-coated her choice of green, with a hand position worked out for a walker. When she says the railing will outlive her, she means it as a compliment to the welding.
We do not weld it to pass the inspection. We weld it to bore the inspector.
