The monitor grid
Pheromone traps for the moths, probe traps for the beetles, read on the same weekday every week and mapped bin by bin. The threshold is not a feeling — each species carries its own count per trap per month, and the map decides what happens next: a cooling front, a clean read, or the conversation nobody wants to have in December.

The bin audit, before a bushel enters
Sanitation is the cheapest chemistry in the book. Residual grain in the plenum, insects under the perforated floor, door seals gone brittle, aeration fans undersized for the mass — the $240 pre-fill audit catches all of it while the bin is still empty and every problem is a broom and a seal kit instead of a claim.

Cooling fronts & aeration
Temperature is the treatment. Grain pushed below fifteen degrees stops most insect reproduction in its tracks; below ten, the colony is running on savings. We schedule the fans, track the front through the mass, and prove it with cable readings — a bin cooled right in October rarely meets a fumigation all winter.

Fumigation, when the count says so
Phosphine to the label, in a bin sealed to hold it, held for the exposure hours the grain temperature allows, cleared with a reading and not a guess. It is the last line of the index on purpose: the cheapest fumigation is the one the trap map and the cooling front talked us out of.

The first front
Fans on, and the first cooling front is pushed through the mass while the weather owes us a night below twelve. The trap line is read at fill temperature, when everything in the bin is still honest about its numbers.
November
The reading that decides
The second front takes the mass below ten, and the trap map is read against the thresholds. This is the week a January fumigation is either prevented or planned — the calendar gives us exactly one honest chance at it.
February
Peak cold
The mid-winter read: cables checked, hot spots probed, the ledger reconciled. A bin that has held below ten since November is a bin whose insects are spending principal, and the arithmetic shows.
April
The outturn report
Every reading, every trap count, every fan-hour and every decision, bound in the order they happened — the file the elevator, the insurer and the bank all ask to see, and the one that sets next season’s plan.

The ledger, in figures
We fumigated every bin every year because our fathers did, and we argued with the elevator about residues every spring. Hopperwatch’s trap map showed four bins that needed chemistry and eleven that needed nothing but the fans run on schedule. The monitoring bill was paid twice over by the fumigations we did not do.
They caught an Indian meal moth flight edge in our plenum the week the malt was due out — two degrees of cooling, a seal kit and no chemistry at all. The elevator’s test came back clean and the buyer asked what we had changed. The answer was a ledger, which is not the answer anyone expects.

Asked at every read day
The five the ledger answers in writing and the coffee answers out loud. Anything else, the read route carries a phone that knows your bin numbers by heart.
I don’t see insects. Do I have them?
Seeing them is a late symptom. A weevil colony works inside the kernel where a scoop cannot find it, and the first readable sign is usually heat — a spot two degrees above the mass on a cable reading. That is why the index starts with traps and cables rather than a flashlight: by the time grain walks out of the mass, the ledger should have flagged it twice.
Why not just fumigate every bin at fill, every year?
Because resistance is a real cost and a bin that does not need it pays it anyway. Label-rate phosphine held properly costs real money per bushel; run as a calendar ritual it selects for insects that survive it, and the year you truly need the chemistry is the year it works least. The threshold exists so the treatment stays a tool instead of becoming a tax.
What does phosphine do to malt quality and buyer tests?
Applied to the label — right concentration, sealed bin, full exposure at the grain’s temperature — phosphine leaves no meaningful residue, and clearance is measured with an instrument before anyone opens a door. What damages malt is a failed fumigation: insects alive in February and grain rejected in April. The certificate we issue with the clearance is the document your buyer’s lab actually wants.
How cold does the grain actually need to get?
Below fifteen degrees stops most stored-grain species from reproducing; below ten, larvae and adults die faster than they replace. The fans you already own can usually reach both if the front is pushed through as a front — all the air through all the grain, on the nights the sky owes you. That is a schedule, not an equipment problem, and it is what the November reading protects.
Do you take the elevator annexes too, or only farm bins?
Both, on the same route — the co-op rows and the flat storage at Malting Cross have been on the ledger longest. Annex work adds headspace reads and dust rules to the same calendar, and the outturn report is identical: one file a buyer’s inspector can walk in ten minutes, whatever the roof over the grain looks like.
