Glasswater builds vanishing-edge and mirror pools where the engineering is the aesthetic — surge tanks sized to the gallon, weirs cut to the millimetre, and a finish so flat the palm line doubles at dusk. Thirty-one edges down the Rancho corridor in nineteen years, and not one of them has leaked.
How an edge works
The tank is the pool
A vanishing edge is a one-way valve with a room behind it: the weir spills, the surge tank catches, the pump returns — balanced to the gallon at design, because an undersized tank sucks air at dusk when everyone swims at once. We size every tank at 1.4 times the weir load and publish the math in the binder, and the automation holds the level to the millimetre forever after.
The level guarantee
The edge holds its level to the millimetre for five years — checked by the automation log, not by eyeball — or the re-level visit is ours. In nineteen years it has been claimed once, on a 2009 tank we rebuilt anyway to learn from.

Soil, sightline, tank math
Borings, the grade the edge will pretend not to have, and the surge calculation against your family’s dusk habit. The binder starts here: every number that follows lands in it, and you keep the binder.
Weeks 3–6
Shell & tank
Excavation, steel, shotcrete for the pool and the tank in one continuous pour sequence, then the 28-day cure — hosed, covered, non-negotiable, and in the schedule from day one.
Weeks 7–9
Weir, finish & deck
The weir set to the millimetre, glass waterline, pebble wet-edge, deck poured to the slot gutter. This is the fortnight the pool starts lying convincingly about which way is down.

What does a vanishing edge cost to run?
More than a flat pool, less than most people fear: the edge pump runs on a variable-speed schedule the automation writes for itself, and the honest figure — higher in swimming months, lower in winter — is a line in the binder at quote time, modelled on your tariff, not discovered in July.
Catch basin or surge tank — what is the difference?
A catch basin waits; a surge tank works. Ours return what the weir spills within seconds, sized at 1.4 times the load so a full pool party at dusk cannot outrun them. The retrofit line in the price card exists because undersized basins are the classic edge failure — and the fix is math, not magic.
Can an edge be added to a pool we already have?
Sometimes, and the survey says which. If the shell is sound and the grade falls the right way on one plane, a weir cut-in and a tank beside the equipment pad can be done in a season. If the grade argues, we say so — the Palm Hollow rewrite on this page is the honest version of that answer.
What does the automation actually control?
Pumps, heat, lights, spillover, water level and chemistry, from any phone or one wall panel — and it logs every reading, so the level guarantee is checked by data rather than by anyone’s squint. It retrofits onto other builders’ pools; twelve went in last season.
What happens to an edge in winter?
The automation drops to winter mode: level held, weirs trickling where a freeze demands it or drained where the county does, heat held at the floor you set. The annual service visit each spring re-calibrates the level and audits the water against the log — free the first year, boring every year after.
Our edge holds a millimetre at a dinner party for fourteen. I asked how; they handed me a binder — weir load, tank math, the pump curve — and said the tank was sized for a party of twenty. The dusk photograph from our fill day is on their page and it is not styled; it just looks impossible.
Two builders said our 2009 pool could not take an edge. Glasswater re-tanked it, re-levelled it, and put the automation on it — the millimetre claim sounded like marketing until the log page: 214 days, zero drift. The re-level guarantee has never even been close to needed.
The mirror pool does the thing where the deck disappears and the palms double. What sold us was less poetic: the slot gutter means no skimmer bobbing in the reflection, and the chemistry automation means the water is the same on a Tuesday in March as it was at the fill. The binder lives on the shelf with the deeds.
An edge is not a shape, it is a budget: so many gallons behind the weir, so many seconds to return them. Get the budget wrong and the horizon flickers at dusk. Get it right and the pool lies to everyone but the log.
