A car is twelve kilowatt-hours a day of new appetite. A heat pump is the furnace’s replacement with a compressor’s manners. Bought separately, from separate trades, they meet for the first time at your panel — and the panel loses. We model the whole house as one electrical budget, size the array to it, and the equipment arrives knowing its colleagues.

Shade-modelled from a drone flight and twelve months of bills — plus the loads you are about to add. The model includes the EV miles, the heat-pump season and the eventual battery, so the array you buy is the array you keep. String inverters on clean planes; microinverters where the cottonwoods win. The roof decides, never the inventory.

The charger circuit

A 48-amp charge station on its own circuit, load-managed against the range and the dryer so a 100-amp service does not become a service upgrade. Off-peak scheduling wired in from day one — the car drinks the array’s afternoon bank and the grid’s midnight rates, whichever the tariff prefers.

Panel capacity, the disconnect, the condensate, the supplementary strip heat that decides whether your winter bill halves or triples. We wire it, coordinate with your HVAC contractor on the sequencing, and the model prices both the equipment and the kilowatt-hours honestly.

LFP storage sized to the circuits that matter and a panel that knows which those are — shedding the dryer before the furnace, charging on cheap sun, riding through the Oster Creek outages that always arrive with the weather report. The gas line, meanwhile, retires.

The model includes the car

Most solar quotes are priced against the house you had. Ours is priced against the house you are becoming: the EV in the driveway, the heat pump on the schedule, the battery in the plan. The production model carries all of it, month by month, and the payback line is computed from the version of your bill that has not happened yet — which is the only one worth computing.

We bought the car first and the quotes afterward, which every solar company treated as a rounding error. Voltwell modelled the mileage, the heat pump we were planning and the induction range we were arguing about, and said the honest array was 12.6 kW — not the 8 they would have sold our old bills. The gas line was capped in April. December’s bill was the connection fee and nothing else, which is the funniest thing that has ever happened to our mailbox.

Unplugged questions

The five every creek-towns kitchen reaches once the charger is on the calendar. The shop line answers seven to five, and the person who answers is the person who would wire it.

Can the roof really run a car?

Yes, with arithmetic rather than enthusiasm: twelve thousand miles of driving is roughly fourteen kilowatt-hours a day — about a fifth of what a good summer day makes on an 11 kW array. The model carries your actual mileage, your actual tariff and the off-peak window, and the payback line it prints has the car in it from the first draft.

What does net metering do when the car charges at night?

It does the bookkeeping: production banks credits by day, the car spends them by night, and the utility trues up on the anniversary at its published rate. With a battery in the plan the loop gets shorter — the array fills the bank, the bank fills the car, and the grid becomes the backup it always should have been.

Will I need a panel upgrade?

Often no, honestly — load management lets a 100-amp service carry a charger, a heat pump and a range by refusing to run the three hardest at once. When the answer is yes, the panel work happens first, inside the same schedule and the same permit set, by the same crew. It is the one part of the job where "we will cross that bridge" is never acceptable.

What about the gas equipment we keep?

Keep what earns its place — a fireplace log starter is nobody’s business. What the model shows is which appliances are worth converting and in what order: the furnace usually first, the water heater beside it, the range last and only if you want it. The plan sequences the conversions so no step strands the next one.

Microinverters or a string inverter for our roof?

Whichever the shade model says. One clean unshaded plane wants a string inverter — one serviceable part, lower cost per watt. Cottonwoods, dormers and chimneys want micros, panel by panel. About a third of creek-town roofs end in micros; the model decides before the contract does, and we quote both from the same flight data.
