Why the shop exists

The December clause

A solar model built on annual averages hides the month you actually watch the meter. Ours is month-by-month from your own twelve bills, winter-weighted: snow weeks counted, the cloud deck priced in, the batteries sized to the solstice instead of the equinox. The quote that comes out is smaller than a summer shop would give you — and it is the one that holds.

95% of a winter-first model

The production guarantee is written against the same winter-weighted model we quote from — not a brochure map. If the year comes in under 95% of it, the shortfall is credited at your net-metering rate every March until it does. Two payouts in eleven winters; both were our sizing errors, both fixed with hardware.

How it goes

Survey to spring true-up

The same sequence on every job — the only variable is your project.

  1. Week 1

    The winter-weighted survey

    Drone flight, horizon trace, and twelve months of your bills read against eleven winters of fleet data. If the honest array is 6 kW against a summer shop’s 10, you hear it from us first — the survey is free precisely so it can say no.

  2. Weeks 2–3

    Permits & the utility

    Building permit, interconnection filing, the HOA packet if your street has one. The December line, the model and the payback year are already in the contract you sign — three paragraphs, one number each.

  3. Week 4

    Install day

    String or micro as the model decided. Flashed attachments, rail, torque to spec, and a thermal walk of the attic the next morning. Most rooftops are one day; ground mounts are two, weather permitting, and in January it sometimes does not.

  4. Every March

    The true-up

    Production read against the model, line by line, with you holding the app. Under 95% and the shortfall is credited at your net-metering rate — the guarantee pays out in the month you can check it.

Does solar actually work in a Kettle Range winter?

Honestly: at 55 to 65 percent of summer output for a clean array, and our models say so in writing. December is the month you buy the array for. Anyone quoting you a June number and calling it a year is selling you half the truth — the December line in our contract is the other half, and it is the difference between a payback year and a payback decade.

String inverters or microinverters — which do you sell?

Whichever the roof argues for. One clean unshaded plane favours a string inverter: one serviceable part, lower cost per watt, a wiring diagram you can read on the garage wall. Cottonwood rows, dormers and chimneys favour micros panel by panel. We quote both off the same model, and about a third of our roofs end in micros. The roof decides, never the inventory.

What about snow on the panels?

Panels are glass at a tilt: snow sheds in a day of sun and the model already counts the weeks it sits. We do not sell brooms, we do not recommend climbing a January roof, and the production guarantee is written against a model that includes snow — so a normal Kettle winter cannot break it.

Do batteries work in the cold?

LFP chemistry does, with one rule: charging below freezing must be blocked, and a quality cabinet blocks it itself. We place batteries on the garage wall, not the shed, keep them above the charge floor, and size them to the solstice — the February outage load, not the July one.

What if December underperforms the model?

Nothing dramatic, which is the point. Every March we true the year up against the model; a miss under 95% is credited at your net-metering rate, and a miss caused by our sizing gets fixed with hardware at our cost. It has paid out twice in eleven winters, and both arrays have since beaten their models.

Two summer shops quoted me 10 kW and a payback that sounded like a lottery ticket. Low Sun modelled the cloud deck, quoted 6.4, and the December line said 61% of June — which is exactly what the app showed. Smaller array, honest number, and it has beaten the model both winters.
