Grappling, all levels
Turn up ten minutes early for your first class and find the desk. Shorts, a T-shirt and water are all you need — gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard are lent for your free week.
Round 03 · The corner
Coached by people who have been hit for a living.
Marcus Reyes
Head coach · MMA · 14–3 pro
Fought professionally for eleven years across three weight classes and retired with his faculties intact — which he credits to the coaches who said no to him. He says no to you with the same affection.
Dana Okafor
Striking coach · Muay Thai · 22–4 amateur
Six-time regional champion who learned to fight at thirty-one, after a desk job and a divorce. Runs Fundamentals and the women’s striking class; nobody has ever left her room feeling stupid.
Tomasz Wilk
Grappling coach · BJJ black belt · D1 wrestler
Wrestled in college, found jiu-jitsu after, and has coached both for fifteen years. Believes a takedown is a conversation, and that most people interrupt.
Round 04 · The path
From your free week to fight night.
Week 1 — your free week
Any class on the board, seven days, no card on file. We lend the gloves, the shin guards and the patience.
Weeks 2–8 — Fundamentals
Stance, footwork, falls and the first submissions. Three classes a week is the sweet spot; two still works.
Month 3 — pick your lane
Striking, grappling or both. Technical sparring opens up: light, opt-in, and always supervised.
Month 6 — the MMA class
Putting the pieces together — cage work, wall wrestling, the transitions between standing and the floor.
When you are ready — Fight Team
An invitation, a date on the calendar and a corner that has done this many times before.
Round 05 · The scoreboard
The numbers, as they stand.
I walked in at thirty-eight with a bad back and no idea how to make a fist. A year later I wrestled in the Sunday open mat and did not die. Ten out of ten.
I have trained at six gyms in three countries. This is the first one where the pros and the beginners share a room and nobody cares which is which.
Coach Okafor is the reason I stayed. She saw me quit twice in my head and would not let it reach my feet.

Questions beginners ask
Do I have to fight?
No. Fewer than one in twenty members ever compete, and nobody is pushed. Most people come for the training, the fitness and the people; the Fight Team is an invitation, never an expectation.
How fit do I need to be to start?
Not at all. Fundamentals is built for people arriving from the couch, the office or a long injury. You go at your pace, you rest when you need to, and the fitness arrives as a side effect.
What do I need to bring?
Shorts, a T-shirt and water. We lend gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard for your free week; after that a starter kit runs about $90, and we will tell you exactly what to buy and what to skip.
Will I get hurt?
Bruises and sore muscles, yes. Serious injuries are rare, because sparring is opt-in, light and supervised, and because we teach you how to fall before we teach you anything else.
Is there a contract?
No. Tuition is month to month, and you can pause or cancel with two weeks’ notice. We would rather you stayed because you want to.
I’m over forty — is this for me?
About a third of our members are. Grappling in particular rewards patience over athleticism, and our coaches have trained people from sixteen to sixty-eight.
The main event
Your first week is free.
Seven days, every class on the board, no card on file. Tell us when you want to start and whether you would rather hit things or grab them; we will have gloves waiting at the desk.
